Hi All,
I am building a new Vista 64 Home Premium based Comp,
On my old XP Based computer I have about 40GB's of Music,Video and Pictures I want to transfer over.
Can I simply connect the 2 Computers together Via a USB to USB lead and transfer the files, will Vista read the XP Files ect,
I do not really want to have to burn all the stuff to disk ect.

Will the USB idea work or no
Is there an easier way ect.

Much help needed !!

I installed Vista then took the hard drive out of the old system and put it in the new one. Copied files. Returned old drive to old machine.

ts called easy transfer. The Belkin Easy Transfer Cable is one product you can use.

I'm about to face transferring from XP to a new build w/Vista, also. Most of my 100 GB's of pictures are on an external drive, so my question is, can I just select them all and let it copy all at once, or is it best to do a few gigs at a time? And how long do you think it will take? I read grumit's link to Microsoft, and the Easy Transfer way says it copies about 20GB/hour. Would this be faster?

Foto - I'm curious... And pardon me if there's some reason to do otherwise... But couldn't you just shut down, plug your external drive into the Vista machine, and start it?? Vista will recognize a new device, and perform the needed config for you to just use it.

Do you mean as opposed to copying onto the new internal drive?

Foto, I agree with Scott, shut down and leave your stuff on the external, then reconnect your external after installation. If you want to copy your data over after reconnecting, go ahead, but you should be fine as is. However if you want 2 copies of your pictures just in case you would have a crash, it would not be a bad idea to copy the stuff over to your internal and have a copy on each one.

Makes sense, but the external I have was a stupid purchase in that it's a Simpletech and can only do a restore. In other words I can't work with the files, unless I copy and paste them all onto the Simpletech. I've done most of them that way as well as a full system backup. Do you think it will copy the restore files onto the new drive?

Foto - Yes: You will be able to copy the files you have on the external drive onto the hard drive on your Vista machine. I will add a caveat though: If you are moving copywritten material that includes a digital licence, the act of moving the files to a different machine may... (who are we kidding - 'Most Likely Will')... cause the copy protection to kick in, and those items would be either disabled or only viewable in some restricted form. In that case, you'd need to contact the place where you purchased those items to get the licence straightened out.

Dont use easy tranfer cables they corrupt some photos, i set up a wireless link and presto perfect
