I recently installed Vista Ultimate on a separate HD. Every 45 seconds - 2 min. My backup HD with XP Home on it shuts down and turns back on.

Please help me solve this problem.

It's not the power saving option in Vista, that turns it off after 20min.

Register or log in to remove.

Disable powering down of hard drives altogether and see what that does. Also check the power setting in CMOS.

Done and done. No fix. I had to open my case and unplug the drive it was so bad. It sounds like a big CRT powering down.

Could it be the indexing service? Vista does do that to try and have what files it thinks you are going to use ready.

I don't know anything about that. Can I remove the HD with XP from the service?

i have the exact same problem as you with the exact same setup: i built a new rig with xp on my old HD and vista home on the new one
i don't want to get rid of xp because there's too much crap on there i want

i just chalk it up to vista bugs and try to ignore it until i finish downloading sp1 and hope that fixes it...oh, wait a minute...i can't download sp1 because i get the dreaded 80073712 error code...

and so it continues...

ohio_grad_06 might have the solution. It hurts to even say that, go IU!

Any way, here is what I did.

1. While in Vista go to the computer tab and right click the HD with XP.
2. Scroll down and click on Properties
3. At the bottom of the properties tab there is a box with a check in it. "Index this drive for faster searching." Take the check out and click apply then ok.

It takes a while to remove all the files from the indexing service but I've gone 15 minutes now without that HD powering up and down. It use to happen every minute.

Good luck.
