Does anyone know if my system will be able to run Windows Vista with the Aero theme well?

AMD Athlon XP 3200+
XFX GeforceFX 5950 (128MB RAM??)
1GB (2x512) Dual Channel PC3200 Corsair RAM
160GB Western Digital HDD, EIDE 8MB Buffer

I'm still at school and the pc is at home so i am unable to DL the Vista compatibility program.

Also, does anyone know how the GeForce 8400, 8600, and 8800GT compare with the older generation GeForce FX line? Besides the whole FX line being online DX9, would the $30 8400 or $60 8600 256MB card kick my FX5950 a$$ on everything? I'm guessing these cards are Vista ready am I right?

I'm debating whether I should build a new system or just "bear with it" with my AMD 3200 XP System running XP. Thank you everyone for your input.

I don't believe you would be happy with Vista Aero on that machine.

Vista in general looks like you would need a ram and video card upgrade

I ran vista for a couple of months with 1 gig of RAM, which ran fine. I upgraded to 2 gigs and didn't really notice a difference. I basically just surf porn and play source based games, you know, the usual stuff.

well if you want to find out just run it in dual boot, then you can go back to xp if you want.

Vista Aero isnt important, but 2gb of ram will make a difrence.

Any VGA card other than the one you have currently would be a lot better. If you can, the 9600GT is a GREAT choice in terms of performance:price. If you want to stick with AMD, get a 6400+ or if you can a Phenom. Personally, the E8400 would be the best choice considering the massive performance it gives despite its price. However, if you don't game ( O.o ), ignore everthing I've said and get something like a Pentium Dual Core, extra stick of 1GB RAM, any VGA card other than the one you have and you're set. Finally, building a whole system would be best because it's fun, and it would be unsuprisingly better than what you have now. good luck.

I think it would run, I ran vista for a little while on an Athlon XP 2800 with a gig of memory and an ATI 9600, aero actually did run...lol. Should you bear with it....I went from my rig I just listed to an Athlon x2 5200+, 2 gb of memory, sata hard drive. And get this, a 7300 LE 64 mb video card....yes lowly, but it was all I could afford, just to get me by for a while, but to keep me away from onboard, got it on ebay for like 13 bucks or something.

Regardless, even in games....my new rig runs circles around my old one. There is no contest! Mind you my 9600 was a 256 mb card. My new rig, I can actually play a little Ghost recon advanced warfighter, madden 07, uhm, medieval 2, so it can do ok for as lowly as it is.

Look around dude, if you are willing to spend 200-300 depending what components you already have, if you watch it, you should be able to do pretty good. Memory is dirt cheap now as well.
