So I've fixed several Trojan viruses this week, mostly of the Antivius 2009 variety.. unfortunately none of them were running any kid of malware app, not even AVG 8 Free. I've sent them on there way, but with only AVG 8 Free, does anyone use other freeware on top of Avg 8 Free?

TIA

There a few free tools used in the removal of XP Antivirus and variants.

The first is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). This excellent program has a very extensive virus defenition database. MBAM can be kept and used at any time as an on-call scanner:

After you run MBAM it is always a good idea to run an online scan for a clean bill of health with this type of infection.

Kaspersky is a very good online scanner:

Follow the intructions on the page to begin. It is a good idea to close any programs and resist surfing whilst the scan takes place.

Once the scan has completed click on the view report and save it to your desktop. If you need help with its analisys post it here.

P.S. If you use IE7 and have trouble viewing the license accept button zoom the screen size to 75% (bottom right of window), and once accepted zoom back to 100%

Thanks for reply, one of the boxes that a Trojan wouldn't allow mbam-setup.exe to run, I got it to run on my machine, but it wouldn't get to the install part of the setup that asks for what language to install in on the infected machine..

Try renaming the setup file to MB.exe and see if that helps.

We may need to run an alternative first if it doesn't.

Also, attempt to do it in safe mode. Sometimes the trojans may not be able to fully load if you are in safe mode.
