Hi,

Looking for a little advice guys. I can’t afford a full upgrade at the moment, but thanks to a friend, I have been given a new motherboard for free. It’s still only a skt754, but like I said, I can’t afford a full upgrade. My current system is as follows:

AMD64 3700+ Clawhammer
Asus K8Ne – Deluxe
Sapphire ATI 9800Pro
2x Western Digital 160Gb SATA
2Gb Crucial PC3200
Win XP Pro

The only change will be the motherboard to an Asus K8N4-e Deluxe, which will give me a PCIe slot instead of AGP. I am therefore looking to upgrade my graphics card, but don’t want to go high end if my current hardware will not allow me to take full advantage. If i chose the Geforce 8800GTX, would I see a decent increase over my current card, or am I overspending? I run my system at 1280x1024 and my main reason for upgrading is flightsim, so any decisions would be swayed by this.

Thanks
Mataus

While I'm no expert, I would think you'd see a significant increase over your 3 generation old card.

Yup. I think you're over-spending. The 8800GTS-320 is probably over powering your CPU, let alone the 8800GTX...

...especially at this resolution. Look at the benchmarks for the newly released HD 2900XT as compared to your proposed 8800GTX. You'll see that at your selected resolution, all cards in the tests (down to the 1950XT) were bottlenecked by the overclocked X6800 processor (not to mention your processor).

OK, i'll scrap the GTX idea. I have seen the GTS 640mb for only a small amount more than the 320mb. As its only a small amount, would it be worth it? It would be nice to have the sliders turned up on games instead of been on low.

I'm also thinking of a card that will last me about 2 years and will be good for vista and a later system upgrade.

Thanks for the advice

While your CPU is going to hold you back a bit form the FULL potential of any 8800 series card, going from a 9800pro either way would be a MASSIVE improvement ( the understatement of the century).

Improvement is what i want. I understand i will be held back by my CPU, but thats something i'll have to cope with, prob till next year!!

From a realistic point of view, what would you recommend?

I would think a 8800GTS 320/640 would be more than enough. If your not too interested in Vista or directx10 go with the X1950GT its only like a 120 bucks and is a vast improvement over your currect vid card.

better yet. 512mb card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102075

I will upgrade to vista within the nxt 12mnths, so i think the GTS640mb will be the choice.

Thanks for the help
