I just built a new pc and have been having some problems with what I believe to be the graphics card. Some time the system will lock up (this has only happened once, while my wife was playing guild wars, this is the first time it happened), once when rebooting from attempt to use the live version of Ubuntu, and then some strange things will appear on the desktop, strange things include something as simple as the arrow that shows my hidden icons disappearing. To today when I opened Firefox the web page was loading but nothing was being displayed in the browser. Then when the computer is restarted and boots to windows the video drivers seem to have become corrupted. I am only able to obtain 4bit color with a 800 x 600 resolution. And the only solution I have found is to simply uninstall the drivers and then reinstall them, and this will fix it for a time. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

Now for the hardware, an 8800gts video card, in a gigabyte ga-965p-ds3 rev 2.0 mobo.

You could try uninstalling the drivers in safe mode.. and then performing a fresh install of the latest drivers. Best place to get the latest drivers is www.guru3d.com

I was hoping not to have to do a fresh install. But if it comes down to that I guess it is an option. Um yes full specs... Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400, ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W dual 12v @ 22a per rail. As far as the psu goes I asked around heir befor I built the system and was given an a'ok by a few of the reg's on my choice.

I just read a post about the lower end 8800gts (320mb ver.) and problems it has at higher resolutions. Well I have a 20in wide screen and I have the res turned up to 1680 x 1050 @ 60hz. Could this have any thing to do with the problems I am having?

I have the 320 MB version driving a 1680x1050 LCD as well as a 1280x960 CRT simultaneously (gaming on the LCD, leaving Windoze up on the CRT to monitor temps and so forth) and haven't had any problems at all. I think the 320MB card runs into trouble at 1920x1200 and above, it should still be fine at 1680x1050 or 1600x1200.

It does sound like a potential PSU problem, or it could just be an OS problem. Which version of Windows are you running anyway? I dual boot XP Pro and Vista Home Prem and both work fine for me. My system is pretty similar to yours except I have a 750 Watt PSU and rev3.3 of the mobo, and I haven't had that sort of trouble. Good luck though, I'm curious to find what the problem is in case I see something similar later.

Did you have a GPU other than the GTS installed on the machine? If so make sure you use a driver cleaner to clear all traces of them. They can eff things up.

Nope, the 8800 is the only one I have ever had in it.
