Does anyone know, how I can get a Linux device driver for a Western Digital WD6401 (640 GB hard disk) that
works for a SLES10 installation ?

Any advice is welcome, but I'm beginning to fear, that it just doesn't exist.

Welcome to the linux forums :)

You're right it doesn't exist. There's drivers for the disk controller on your motherboard which talks to the hard disk not the hard disk itself.

If your controller isn't detecting the drive Linux isn't going to be able to use it, nor is any other operating system for that matter.

Please post your full hardware specs.
