hi,

i've got a viewsonic VX924 which is not bad,but i want a wide screen...

i saw an awesome looking Xerox 5ms wide screen, but defer to those with greater knowledge of the subject...

gaming requirements, fairly obvious, a fast panel...i mostly play BF2 and FPS's...but i also need good colour representation, for web dev work...

looking around 19-20"...

thoughts?

kind regards :)

You may want to check out the Widescreen Gaming Forum. Loads of info on that site about widescreen monitors.

NP. I confess I am not sure what you referring to. I have no idea what "novatech" is, but no worries. That site I linked to is just an information site/community forum like this one. To my knowledge they do not sell anything themselves. There are just specifically devoted to discussing widescreen monitors. Many folks on this site would also have good suggestions and you may get some posted to this thread so you may want to check back from time to time.

As for your initial request for suggested monitors - a popular and relatively well regarded one at the moment is this Samsung (206BW) 20" LCD. It has a very fast reported response time (2ms).

Good luck with your search.

lol!

i actually thought i was posting on novatechs forum, shows you how awake i am!

from your link i found out that 24" monitors use different panels then <24" panels and provide a better picture...

i already have a 19" 4:3 aspect monitr which is very good, i just fancied getting a wide screen next...i have been waiting for crysis for getting on for a year now, so i don't think the core 2 duo/DX10 card is gonna happen just yet ^^, so i'm gonna splash out on a new monitor...

will check out your recommendation, thx :)

2ms sounds incredible, mine is 4ms...

Well being a programmer and sometimes a DBA, unfortunately, I can tell you that a 24" monitor will spoil you.

I have had the pleasure of using the Dell 24" 2405, I think that was the model number, currently I believe it is the 2407(?), and that is a sweet monitor for programming/DBA'ing with :)

It was soo nice I started looking at the 24" market and went with the Gateway FPD2485W 24", because I wanted the monitor then, and not wait on it being shipped from Dell.

While I was a bit nervous about the Gateway, once unboxed, hooked up, and doing some gaming, was not disappointed.

I had been using 19" LCD's and 21 CRTs at home and work, respectively, and I can tell you now, I hate using anything smaller now. The real estate on those two monitors is just awesome.

But mehh.. if you truly just want a small screen I have seen the Samsung mentioned above talked about and recommended by a few people.

I've got the Dell 2405FPW, and it's a beautiful screen - huge, very good quality and fast enough for FPS games.

The 2407, which is the current model, has the same quality, but lower response time (I think 8ms) so it would be a perfect buy for what you're looking for.

I would definately say that getting a 24" quality panel is easier than 22 and below.

I'm confused about Dell. I wasn't sure if it was their 24" or 20.1" but I heard that they don't always manufacture using the S-IPS panel technology.

Honestly, I didn't just hear...I saw several reviews that proved it. It seems that IPS technology has advanced enough so that you get the best reasonable picture with the ability to finally play FPS n' such. Am I wrong?

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 940 BW (19" WS 1440x900). Got it last year at Best Buy for $214.99! It has 4ms GTG. It's pretty nice, but smaller than I thought. I play a lot of FPS games as well and haven't noticed any ghosting.

Another plus is, this monitor is HDCP capable (at least from what I've seen on the internet. Didn't pay attention when I first recieved it  ), which is good for whenever I decide to buy an HDDVD/BDDVD ROM (waiting for prices to drop).

At work, I just got a Dell 24" monitor and I must say... I'll probably buy one this summer for home use (even though I just got the 19" WS less than a year ago). 24" is nice but I heard if you lower the resolution, you lose sharpness *shudders*.

Anyways, there's two monitors for you to decide on
One for your criteria, and the other for you to think about
