Copy and Paste

I have recently been unable to perform a simple ctl-c, ctl-v copy and paste
function. Whenever I do so, I get a copy of the screen shot. The only way I
can accomplish any type of copy/paste is to hit ctl-c twice and wait for the
clipboard toolbar to pop up. This is fine for in-program use, but I cannot
do things like copy html code and bring into another program. I know I have
some sort of virus, but after running all of my anti-virus and spyware scans
I still have this and other annoying problems! If anyone can help me with
this I would greatly appreciative.

Ed, do you run a screenshot tool continuously? Several graphics programs
I've installed lately have automatically added or offered to add such a
tool. In some cases, I've had to turn these off after the install was
complete. Is it possible that this tool has hijacked the hotkeys for
editing functions? If you are running such a program, try disabling it.
Then test. Or open the program and find a menu that will let you
reconfigure the hotkeys to something else.

Also, what clipboard tool pops up? Sounds like third party as Windows'
clipboard, as far as I know, does not do this. That clipboard tool could be
related to the problem too.

Thank you for your reply. The situation still continues however!
I don't use the screenshot function continuously (as far as I know), but it
does seem that I have a virus that has hijacked some areas of my system. I
have run my Norton AV and it still persists. Of course all these problems
showed up after I downloaded service pack 2. I don't have the capability to
restore from before the install as the function was turned off prior to the
install.

A better example of the problem is what occurs in Excel. When I highlight a
cell or cells for copying, the flashing outline box only displays for a brief
second before being 'disabled'. If I continue to try and highlight and then
ctrl-c (or right click and select copy) the same thing happens and then the
office clipboard pops up with the icon on it representing the copied
selection.

The installation of SP2 appears to breathe new life into dormant or low
nuisance level malware that is already present on a user's system. Checking
the system thoroughly before installing SP2 is the standard recommendation
and a step that is included in the SP2 documentation. Doesn't really help
you much at this point in time but mention it so that you'll know why all
of these problems seemed to appear at that particular time.

Office clipboard uses the same mechanisms but it operates independently of
the Windows clipboard. So although it is from Microsoft and there is a
small amount of code overlap, it is managed by the Office program instead
of operating system.

I think the best approach for you would be to concentrate on cleanup first.
Many problems evaporate once that is done. Any leftover problems can then
be dealt with on a one by one basis.

The page link below leads to a list of tools that can be used for detection
and repair. Suggest running first in Safe Mode where most malware will not
be loaded making it more difficult to detect and clean.

If after cleanup, the Office clipboard is still not working properly, try a
running a repair of Office.

I was googling a possible answer and so far this is the only place that came up with the exact same problem.

I have a user who is experiencing the same problem, and so I backed up his data, and wiped out his hard drive and installed from scratch.

I just did a vanilla setup... WinXP Pro, Updates, Office 2k3, ACT2005 ver 7, and Panda Antivirus 2008 (used Free-AV prior to this). 1 GB RAM

No malware was detected.

All went well, and after restoring the data, and checking once again, I gave it to the user. A few hours later, he experienced the same problem again.

I am guessing it has to do something with the data. If anyone has had this problem and successfully identified what is causing the copy paste error, I would appreciate your thoughts.
