Video editing in Linux

For starters I am completely new to Linux and I am wanting to know if there are any good free editing tools for video editing and encoding
I am running Ubuntu Linux 10.10 meerkat xfce with all repositories enabled

What kind of video editing are you wanting to do? Is it just small-scale hobby editing, or do you need something with a little more firepower?
