I just got my Antec P180B case today. It's a nice option, and it has a $40 rebate this week at Newegg.

Why DDR2-1066? DDR2-800 will get you to FSB 400 (4GHz processor clock speed on the E6700) without overclocking the RAM.

Also.. xp or vista?? I really wish I was building this back when there was that free upgrade to vista w/purchase coupon thing....
May 16, 2007 5:14:16 AM

FYI: I didn't go w/the ballistix, because the rebate had to be postmarked by the 18th. It wasn't going to get to my house in time to be postmarked by then :/
May 16, 2007 8:14:31 AM

What is done is done, but did the Rebate say postmarked by the 18th? Usually if you buy before the expiration date, they give you about 30 days.
I can't d/l at work or I would look.

What case are you going to put all this in? I'd go with an NZXT Lexa or Apollo, or an Antec P180B or P182, just some suggestions.

I actually went w/the thermaltake armor series. I currently have their Tsunami Dream and I'm incredibly impressed with the quality of their build. I was VERY close to going w/the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... (especially since it would kick in a free 320GB seagate) for the professional look.. but the gamer inside of me went for the pretty lights/colors :( . Also, it looked like the GTX might be a bit cramped in there, but that could have just been the picture...

I was also considering the antec 900. I did actually consider both of those NZXTs, but I thought the armor series had a bit more refined look. The apollo looks too much like an alienware, whom I have very little respect for and did not want someone to associate my computer with it. I did almost grab this one for some ridiculous reason though :)

Yeah, the Nemesis looks gawdy, which I don't like, but at the same time it looks kind of bad ass.
May 16, 2007 3:41:47 PM

I recently installed Vista Ultimate... and as a gamer and videophile I can say that the only hang up so far is that some streaming video doesn't play in IE7... Not much I know.

I just have been too lazy to try and fix.

My 8 year old copy of UT99 plays well, so does BF2142 and UT 2004. VLC media, Azureus, Nero, Deamon Tools, Alcohol 120, all work.

It supports my HT Omega Claro audio card - so no hardware issues.

I like the system... as much as my opinion counts.
May 16, 2007 4:19:37 PM

Get a silverstone case. No plastic and well built.
May 16, 2007 4:26:23 PM

Go with a better DVD drive.
May 16, 2007 4:54:59 PM

Gold.. I *did* end up going w/a better (hopefully) drive. I wanted to get an LG, but I did not find any SATAs that met my standards.

Here was my final build, btw:

Looks nice... but now when the DX10 games come out this fall you'll need to plunk another $100+ on Vista.

True and make sure its the 64bit version or next year that will be another $100+. With 2GB's or RAM and that 768MB GPU almost any upgrade would kill the 3.3GB max of 32bit OS'es.

Any performance hit running 32bit programs in 64bit OS?

I may or may not go w/vista... but I bought XP because I'm one of the oldschool people who believes that you should always have a valid, solid OS if everything else fails...

EDIT: And yeah, I kick myself every day because I didn't pick up XP when it had that free "upgrade to vista" coupon w/it...

I was lucky enough to get the money to build a computer in time to catch the Coupon thing with xp. I still haven't received my upgrade cd yet though. (doesn't matter though, I'm not upgrading yet, anyways.)

Yeah, I have the same case. Seems a little cramped in my terms. Had to return a TT fan controller because the door on the case would not close.

It's a O.K. case, I only paid 45 bucks for it because it was a floor model at a local computer shop. :D

Nice list by the way. Good luck. :D

Dont kick yourself because it would have been the crappy 32bit vista. I know of no other way to get the 64bit version than to buy the retail version of Vista.

Both yes and no as it all depends on the amount of RAM you have. IE with 4GB's of RAM the 64bit OS will have near a GB extra of usable RAM.

My upgrade CD took about 6 weeks, just got it last week. I think they sent an email 4-5 before it mailed.

I got mine last week, and ordered it close to the end of the deadline. I had patience and didn't send any email. :p
