I allow others to connect to my Hughesnet 7000 modem through a switch, and have little or no control over their systems or habits. I want to secure my computer from any intrusions that they may bring into my network, such as rootkits, viruses, etc. I have no need for networking with other computers other than sharing the internet connection. I have "File and Print Sharing" turned off and am using AVG Internet Security.
Are there actually risks involved in letting other unknown people connect to this network?
Is there anything else that I should consider doing?
You paying for the service? You'll be the one getting prosecuted if one of them downloads child pornography or something. Bottom line is to lock down your network, not just your computer.
