It all started when I had a perfectly working computer with an Athlon XP 1700+ in it. It is my wife's computer, but I wanted it to be better for her. I searched around the Internet and people were using my motherboard with my current bios with Barton CPUs, so I started looking for one.
I ended up trading for a couple of Barton 2500+ CPUs, so I pulled the 1700+ out and put one of the Bartons in. There was no post... fans turned on, but little more, and then pressing the power button in for the 5 or 6 seconds or 10 did nothing in terms of turning off the computer, so I had to turn off the psu from the button in the back. Clearing CMOS did nothing.
So I tried the second Barton (and this one had some burnt black on several of the pins and some chips on the side of the core). This second Barton did not post either, but I at least could turn off the computer by holding the power button in for 5 seconds or so.
Then I put my trusty old 1700+ back in and windows now would no longer load up. I got a "could not find vgaoem.fon file" error. I went to my XP disk and attempted to repair chkdsk /r and let that run to completion. After a reboot, I got the same missing vgaoem.fon error again, but this time I fould some specific instructions on how to fix that problem, (using the repair console and expanding the file from the cd to the windows\system location. So I followed them, it worked, and windows loaded up after the next reboot.

Now... the Windows XP SP2 probnlem. My font is wierd. I have random numbers in odd places. For example, when I ender a password, I see IIIIIIII instead of ********. On the top righ hand side of opened windows, I see 0, 1, and r instead of the symbols for Minimize, Maximize, and Close _, the box, and X. And in places where there is a box to put a check in like changing the location for FPS in Fraps or intalling a video driver and selecting I accecpt, the box is all messed up. There are many other wierd things going non, like on IE in front of the back button is the number 6 and in front of the forward button arrow is the number 6.
Please help.
BTW, I just reinstalled video drivers, and this did nothing to help.
