Hello all,
I have just set up my house so it is wireless ( :D ), but the speed is not where i want it...one side of the house seems to have no signal while the other side is just fine...

So I have decided that I would like to connect 3 computers to the main computer via ethernet cables. I figure I could run the wires through the attic and into each room (2 or 3 rooms). However, I would like it to look a little bit professional and instead of having wires all over the rooms, I wanted to have an ethernet outlet in each room.

My question to you guys is, if this is way too complicated to do and if I should just run ethernet cables through each room, or should I try to put ethernet outlets in the rooms? And if this is feasible, what would be the best way to go about it.

As for experience, I really do not have alot of experience with electricity, but my brother-in-law is an electrician and would help me, if that matters at all....

Thanks a bunch!

Since your house is already built you'll have to use the tubes in the wall for your electrical lines and attach neat little network outlets next to them. You would need a cable roll and the clamp tool for attaching the wires to the outlet. Should be manageable...

You'll need to purchase Plenum grade ethernet cabling - Cat 5e Plenum. It'l cost more but it has a fire retardant on it that will resist burning. Regular cables release toxic odors when burning. If you're going to put cables in the wall, codes state you need to use plenum. Its the same wire, just costs a little more.

At some location you will need to figure out where you want your switch in your house. From there, you'll run your cables through the attic and drop them between the walls. Depending on how your house is built, you may need to drill holes to have the cabling go between the walls.

You may need a Fish Tape which will help you run the cabling. Ideally, you would be in your attic, drop the cable down through the wall, pull it out and give yourself several feet of slack.
You would then run the cable to the room you want, drop it down into the that room's wall.

Make sure you line up where you're going to cut your wall with where you're going to drop your cable. You have about 16 inches between the studs in your wall. It may be easier to drop the cabling on the opposite side of your electrical outlets since you'll be able to figure out where the stud is and where your cable is.

You'll need to purchase Cat5e RJ plugs for your cable since you'll custom make them. You'll need a crimping tool for the cabling, face plates for the wall, and the RJ block and punch down tool.

When running the cable, it would hurt to leave yourself 10 feet of slack up in your attic incase you need to move outlets in the future.

Each end should be punched down into an RJ Block and use patch cables to connect.
