I have an old RCA DirecTV that we have been using for about 8 years. I
recently have been seeing ads on Starz Channels for "Starz On Demand"
claiming to be able to stop, rewind, pause, etc. their movies with no
extra charge, included in the subscription. Can anybody explain more to
me? Do I need any more equipment to use it? Email appreciated, TIA

It really has nothing to do with the TV, you need digital cable and a
converter box for it to work. It will work with any TV that has a
video input jack.

Yes.

"Starz! on Demand" is free for anybody who has a DirecTV DVR and a Starz!
subscription. You just need to sign up for SoD to get it activated.

Basically, it's useless since you already have a DirecTiVo.

i thought directv didn't have vod? or was this meant to be a wiseass post
pointing out that vod is useless if you have tivo?...which, correct me if
i'm wrong, but that would require you to record everything you might want to
watch 'on demand' at a later time, right? not exactly the same, now is it?

Technically,a DirecTV/DVR is not truly a VOD system. It COULD be
characterized as a NVOD system (Near Video On Demand). You enter a
program on the WISH LIST of a TiVo and you most likely have to WAIT for
it.A truly VOD system to me is one that works off of the internet and
downloads programs IMMEDIATELY according to a choice list of programs
like Akimbo systems at http//www.akimbo.com/index.html.

It doesn't. "Starz! on Demand" from DirecTV is done by having your
DirecTiVo record movies that Starz! shows, but you don't tell it to record
them...DirecTV does.

No, it's meant to point out that *any* recording by your DirecTiVo is
pretty much the same, and having DirecTV control the recording is dumb,
stupid, useless, and inane.

there are at least 30 movies on starz on demand on cable right now i
think...not to mention another 20 on hbo and showtime, plus their serieses
and all the other stuff that's available on demand from cable...now vod has
its drawbacks as far as functionality and i'm not saying it's the world's
greatest technology, but it's a stretch to compare it to tivo...how many
hours of programming will fit on most people's tivos?

OR digital cable, as I mentioned earlier.

Right. On cable, "Starz! on Demand" is a true VOD system. With DirecTV,
it's a "record it yourself and watch it later" system just like any other,
except that DirecTV *tells* you to record it.

You really haven't read my responses, have you? On DirecTV, the "Starz! on
Demand" is implemented by having your DirecTiVo record the show. It is
*exactly* like a TiVo, because it *is* a TiVo.

> hours of programming will fit on most people's tivos?

Well, I can keep about 200 hours on my DirecTiVo, so 50 movies or so would
be no big deal. With the HD DirecTiVo, if you record SD, you can store
about 225 hours.

Since it's easy and cheap to add hard drive space to any TiVo, it's not
that uncommon to see people with 100 hours capacity or more. Upgrading the
HD DirecTiVo can give you 500 (or more) hours of SD recording time.

yeah, i've been reading your responses, but starting with the first one, you
weren't real clear about your point...i thought there might be something
with directv that prompted you to record or auto recorded some starz stuff,
but i wasn't real sure if it was that or a little sarcasm saying that you
can just record whatever you want and watch it later...i think i get it now,
though
