Right now I have a cd for Windows XP Pro 32 bit. If I buy a Windows XP Professional Upgrade CD 64 bit version will this succeed in upgrading me to 64 bit, or will it now even do anything because I already have pro? Or do I need to reinstall windows starting out with a 64 bit version?
Windows Vista is a "newer" operating system. In order to install Windows XP, the trial version you have must:
1). Be a "bootable" CD-ROM containing system "start-up" files! (not an UPGRADE trial for Windows XP Home)
2). Be installed on a "fresh" partition,..meaning a newly formatted hard drive. You cannot install different OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS (unless they are an UPGRADE from a PREVIOUSLY release version of the operating system).
3). If the CD "is" BOOTABLE,...make sure your system BIOS boot order is set to CDROM as the FIRST boot device!
4). You can create a BOOTABLE DATA CD using Nero and then transfer the image of the Windows XP 64 trial to that bootable disk.
You will have to do a "clean" install of Windows... there is no way to upgrade an existing 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version. The best thing to do is back up your data, wipe the hard drive and install your 64-bit upgrade CD. It will most likely ask you for your Windows XP Pro CD at some point during the installation... so keep it handy.
