I recently bought a Maxtor Shared Storage II 1TB,

It has 2x500gb 7200rpm 16mb cache drives that run SATA300.

The device LAN port capable of 100mbps and 1000mbps

It topped the charts on Tomsnetworking that how i found the forums.

Anyhow my question,

I know from the review that this drive can do around 8mb/s read and write on 100mbps LAN and around 14mb/s write on gigabit and around 18mb/s read on gigabit.

I have a Dlink DGL-4300 router which is gigabit but my Laptop only has 100mbps, the shared storage goes into the router and so does my laptop.

If more than one person uses the Shared storage II how does that work ?, do they each get 8mb/s or do they each have to share 8mb/s or 14mb/s when writing to the shared storage.

I use this device to share my media, and i only have one computer, but if i ever expanded or more people were to use it, i just wondered how it worked, as it is meant for more than one person at a time to use.

Also as far as 8mb/s goes what sort of streaming bandwidth does that allow, depending if you all get 8mb/s or if you have to share.

thanks, this is really bugging me not knowing this

It's pretty easy to identify the NAS itself as the bottleneck here. Nothing else has a limit as low as 14/18 MB/s. However it's still not clear if two connections would split this or do better. Some things that would affect this are:

1. Is the NAS CPU bound or I/O bound?
2. Are the drives RAIDed?
3. If the drives are not RAIDed, are both users accessing the same drive?

Because the NAS is somewhat of a black box, you'll probably just have to try it out. You can find the iozone utility online and run the test yourself if you're very curious. I've used it myself a few times to benchmark my homebuilt NAS.
