Hello,
I was trying to plug in a serial cable on my PC when I noticed that my video card was loose in the slot.
I moved it to another slot, and the system recognized it, but had trouble finding the drivers.
Now every time I start up it hangs up.
I can start it up in safe mode just fine but there are no driver's loaded for the video card, just the "failsafe".
Is there a way to tell where it is hanging?
Is it possible to clear out the old video drivers and start again?
Is it possible that it is hung halfway through the driver install process, and if so what can I do to correct the problem?

Boot up in Safe Mode With Network, download the latest video driver for your hardware, go into the Hardware Manger and remove the current video driver, reboot normally, then install the driver.

I gave that a try and may have discovered part of the problem.
My modem is not showing up now.

I remember having a problem with this when I first built the PC.

There is some kind of conflict between the Modem, Video Card, and Sound Card.

I am going to go digging for my notes and see what I can find.

I remember having to go through some process of intalling and uninstalling the Modem, Sound Card, and Video Card in different orders until they all worked.
It was pretty much trial and error.
If there is a more rational approach to figuring it out I would be glad to try it.

I do have the most recent drivers for the video card (old card, no updates in a couple of years) modem (same thing), and sound card.

It is just a pain figuring out the order that makes it all work.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Was this PC upgraded from NT 4.0? If so, go into the BIOS and tell it you are running a plug-and-play aware OS. That will allow the BIOS to configure your cards so they do not conflict with each other.

No, it is a clean install of Windows 2000 but I will make sure that Plug and Play is enabled.

Thanks for the reply.

Just an update. Still having the same problem.
I have the correct video card drivers.
The modem is not installed or in the PCI slot.
When I install the drivers for the video card I get to the normal
"Windows must restart to complete your installation"
and it hangs on the restart, every time.
I can start up in Safe Mode, but no other way.
Is there a way to do boot logging or something to see what is causing it to hang?
I am having a hard time because that is my only computer at home, so I can't be online while I work on it.
Any help would be appreciated.
