Forum Linux/Free BSD : General Discussion Drivers for nvidia XFX 6600gt

Thanks for the response I have a Nvidia xfx 6600gt coming and I looked on Nvidia page to install drivers and I read a couple of confusing install pages and at the end it had a hypertext that said ,read me,So I hit it and it went to a set of directions that was just a little smaller than War and Peace. If I run into those type of problems, my new 6600 will not get up and running. Can someone give me a few words of hope?

Follow the directions and everything should be fine. Don't be intimidated by having to drop to command line. ;)

Unfortunately the drivers released from manufacturers don't have distribution specific instructions. Check the documentation for your chosen linux distribution and see what they say to do. Don't get the drivers from nividia directly until you've tried the drivers from your distribution.

It gets really confusing because each distribution puts files in slightly different places.

It's very likely that whatever distribution you're using will have open source drivers already. They won't provide all the fancy (but generally useless) effects, but they're otherwise pretty good.
