If you can afford it get 8800gts 640.But at least stay with 8800 series cards,as the 8600 series,even in sli,sucks for performance.My 2 7950gt's kick the 8600 butts.I just don't have dx10 support is all.I would never recommend 8600.Goodluck.

hey,
my thinking would be to go the 8800. that way if u want in the future u can always chuck another one in the spare slot, also save u buying a new set of cards later on.

go with 8800gts 320MB it's best bang for the buck. future games will need more memory but will also need future video cards lol

Does anyone have any details on how wide the performance gap is between SLI 8600GTS and SLI 8800GTS?

I was also considering going with the SLI configuration as the 8600GTS is available with passive cooling.

SLI/Xfire is only worth it with 2 highend cards, never with mid-lowend cards.

I would disagree with that. My SLI 8800GTS smoke my buddies GTX for the same price.

Same build other than GPU(already stated), RAM, DVD, and CASE manufacturers. Timings on the RAM are identical however.

true, but what if one of your buddies add another 8800gtx in the system?

just curious what resolutions and settings. i was thinking about adding another gts 320 because i need a new mobo anyways soon but i was told the performance wouldnt stack up because the memory isnt combined (having 2 x 320 in sli is still 320)

After building a few SLI rigs for friends and customers I have decided I wouldn't do it for myself.

It just doesn't benefit some games and for some it creates bugs. nV doesn't release drivers often enough to keep up with game profiles and some bugs never get fixed. My buddy gets pretty annoyed when he has to disable SLI just to play a game.

Don't get me wrong, its not all bad and if you don't play a lot of different kinds of games you may never have issues, but its not for me :)

I'm going to keep buying the biggest single card I can afford :)

I said mid to lowend cards which an 8800GTS most definitely isn't. So your example doesn't apply there.
