Tom's Hardware > Forum > Windows Vista > Vista General Discussion > why can't i move these folders?
Word :    Username :

I click my user name and i get folders such as contacts, documents, pics, videos etc. I want to move those folders to another partition. So i click copy and paste it in on my d drive. Then i go back and try and delete the original folder, it deletes but so does the folder on my d drive.

Then i did this:
For each of the folders you want to replace, Copy and Paste them to the desired new location.
(ensure you do not have a folder there by that name)
Next, for each folder you copied,
Right-click on that folder and choose Properties.
Click on the Location pane and then click the Move... button.
Navigate to corresponding folder in the new location
Click Apply, answer Yes in the resulting pop-up (choose Copy and Replace for any other screens).

But still the same problem. Does Vista have to have those folders or something? Man i miss my documents. :(

Vista has better security which can be annoying to some users.

It seems to me that the account's folders can't be moved anywhere. They can be copied elsewhere, but not moved. If you want another location for each folder, start, right-click each folder, location tab, copy & paste the desired new location, ok. Don't click move. Also, don't change your account root folder. Vista needs to write app data/temp files under each account.

The only thing left to do is I.E.'s save-as location. Point it to your new partition and I.E. will remember it.

I think vista installed on your computer has some problem as you are performing right steps to change the path of document folder, normally using these steps the path of document folders gets change.
