Hello All,

I'm struggling with a decision, and I'm hoping you all can chime in with your well-considered opions. For philosophical reasons, I am choosing to use AMD/ATI components.

I am looking to build a medium-high end gaming/general-purpose system based on an Athlon X2 6000+. The question is: which OS - Vista Home Premium or XP Pro, and which video card - ATI Radeon 2900XT or X1950XT?

I am concerned about both future-proofing, and this is conflicting with software compatibility with the Vista OS.

I welcome your thoughts.

Thanks!

Why AMD and ATi? It doesn't matter, I would just like to know your reasoning.

As for your questions: XP (Vista is far too unstable) HD2900XT is the better card by a wide margin.

Yeah get the E6600 and a Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB and vista premium youll be set for the future for along time. and yes you need vista for future proof system. not a whole lot of bugs right now.

With the xp/vista os question, that depends on what you are willing to put up with and what hardware you want. If you are going to only use ati, then go with the HD 2900xt, for the DX10, but if your willing to consider NVidea, then get a 8800. Ok, now if you go with the HD 2900XT and are willing to give the OS time to get better and the drivers to work better, then vista is the OS you can go with, but If you want it to work well, now then use xp, but you will either have to live without dx10 and just use dx9 gaming (the 2900XT and the NVidea 8800 is still a better choice), or if your willing to pay more money letter on, and upgrade to vista (and go through all the migration work).

if you want dx10 you need vista and the 2900XT and it preforms much better than the x1950XT it also depends on how much ram you have if you have less than 2gb ram then go with xp
