3:28:22 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn Welcome to Dell Chat! I hope you are doing well, and thank you for waiting. My name is Marilyn, and I'll be your personal sales agent. I can be reached at marilyn_phillips@dell.com.
3:28:27 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn If we happen to be disconnected, i can email you. May I have your email address?
3:28:27 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn How may I assist you today? 3:29:01 PM Ralph Caraveo Hi there, I've heard different stories about Dell allowing computer buyers to downgrade their computer to XP. Is this still an option?
3:29:37 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn Hi there!
3:29:49 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn stories? there are so many stories
3:30:04 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn well it depends on what youmean
3:30:05 PM Ralph Caraveo lol, yes
3:30:49 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn there is an opportunity to get a downgrade on a gaming pc with Vista Ultimate...you get the downgrade to xp
3:31:04 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn but this is an expensive option
3:32:18 PM Ralph Caraveo So, we're limited to whatever OSes are available on the "build your machine" page right? If so, that is very unfortunate.
3:33:24 PM BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn well Microsoft changed the operating system almost two years ago offering Vista. they are not selling xp at all ever again after june 30th
3:36:27 PM Ralph Caraveo Okay, I just wanted to make sure that there still wasn't a way to get a system with XP on it. I'll just have to get a copy of XP from newegg.com and throw the vista disc in the trash or use it as a coaster for my drink. Hehe, as you can see I'm just frustrated with the rest of the world about how Microsoft is forcing us to use an inferior operating system. But thank you for your time Marilyn it's much appreciated.
3:36:54 PM System BE_RR_Rep_Marilyn has left this session!
3:36:54 PM System Thank you. Your Dell Chat session has ended.
I guess Marilyn wasn't very happy with my last response but it's the truth.
You are still able to order Dells with an XP downgrade disc... but it does cost you an extra $50. Most OEMs will continue to offer it as an option until January 2009. After that, it really is time to let go. After 8 years?!? Even 98 didn't last that long and people were demanding it over XP when XP was first released. (Oh yes, XP sucked... but people seem to have forgotten all the negativity that was spewed towards it). Of course, XP was miles ahead of 98... but all the same complaints that are now being leveled against Vista were once level against XP.
Fascinating.
I loved XP right from the start... even with RC 2. So I always have a good laugh at all the negative comments about Vista, knowing that all the XP evangelists out there once aimed those same comments at XP. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

That's the major caveat for sure, Ryan. The longer it goes, the harder drivers will be to find. We barely managed to get drivers for a Dell laptop that someone requested be downgraded to XP. They definately weren't available from Dell.

I ran into that same situation with WinXP, I had a laptop that came with WinXP Home on it, I wanted to install Win2K Pro on it, but couldn't secure drivers to do it.
