I posted this in the driver section but it seems few people go there so sorry for the double post. I have 4 computers. 2 are Gateways (not my fault) 1 is a laptop built myself 1 is a laptop made by Acer. (I like Acer) My problem is that whenever I try to put any of them in hibernation they will give me the error "the divice for communication port 1 is preventing hibernation please update this driver" or something close to that. Any idea why this would happen? I mean the only thing these boxes have in common is windows xp pro 1 of them has premium. Hibernation allows my ups to back things up in a power failure and it saves energy too. Thanks for the help. I haven't been here in a while. Sometimes life gets in the way I guess.

Look at the power management settings in BIOS on each of the machines. I set mine to S3/STR (suspend to ram).

Yup, your machines need drivers to do hibernation. it should be on the drivers CD. If not, go to their site for downloads.

Is your XP SP2 or SP3?

I didn't know there was a Windows XP SP3. Where do I get it? I have auto updates on shouldn't that have done it? What driver CD do you refer? I have the disk that the Gateway came with but I rebuilt this drive and put xp pro on it and downloaded the latest drivers for the board and components from gateways site. I didn't want all of the other garbage on the original disk. I guess I'll have to go back there and see if I can find anything else, but there are 2 identical gateways 1 acer and 1 hp. I can't see all 3 manufactures having the same motherboard driver issue but who knows. I'll check on those bio settings. Thanks. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I just hope gateway gives me that option in bios. They like to restrict the h out of you so you buy new machines.

The name of the driver for hibernation varies from board to board. I can't give you a specific name cuz you're not gonna find it. Just make sure you installed EVERYTHING. You must have an ACPI entry in device manager.

SP3 can be found at google. Don't jump on it yet until you fix your current problem.
