I've been using vista for roughly a year now, and I've had countless problems with it up until now. Originally, I was having some troubles setting up my microphone, but after fiddling with some settings the problem worked itself out. My microphone has been working perfectly for about a year, and now suddenly vista has decided to have it stop working. My microphone is enabled, it is set as the default device, the sensitivity is maxed, the microphone is plugged in, and it's even detected by vista. The only problem is it just won't work.

The only thing i know for sure is that the microphone is not the problem, I tested it on another computer that has windows XP and it worked just fine. Currently I have SoundMAX Integrated HD Audio, and as far as I know my drivers are up to date (or at least windows can't seem to find any updates...). Driver version is 6.10.1.6180 if it matters.

Thanks in advance.

I've had the same problem with HP Compaq 6720s Notebook Vista Business. It has ADI 1981 HDA CODEC with SoundMax drivers.

The problem is that I cannot hear in speakers/headphones the signal that came from microphone input. And there's no microphone volume slider in speakers settings.

Here's the solution that worked for me and possibly will work for any card with SoundMax drivers.
Open Registry and find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001\AD1981\Disable

There you should find two controls - MicV and MonR. I had both set to 01 and I suppose that their meaning is to disable MicrophoneVolume and MonitorRecording or something like that. After I set both to 00 and rebooted there appeared a microphone slider in speakers configuration.

Hope, this helps.
