I recently bought a internal SATA Samsung 750gb hard drive. I have that drive and a Raptor 150gb. I have the Raptor 150 used to hold my current version of XP, and I am using the Samsung as additional Storage to hold my pictures and music and various other files. I formatted the Samsung under Windows XP, but I want to reformat and install a fresh version of Vista Ultimate on the Raptor 150. I was wanting to know if I can simply install the fresh version of Vista on the Raptor and then connect the Samsung for Vista to recongize it with no problem. I am wanting to do this to keep all of my pictures and personal files.
As long as it's just a simple volume, Vista should be able to read it just fine.
You may have to import it as a "Foreign Disk", however:
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management
Right click on your drive and choose "Import Foreign Disk".
If you're using XP/MCE, immediately following importing the disk, I'd copy the files back on to your C: drive, then format the XP drive, then copy the files back onto the drive.
For some reason MCE formats the drives as Dynamic, rather than Basic which can lead to corruption in Vista.
