Anybody know what's up with "Windows Update", Windows XP Service Pack 3?

I get a notification on my computer that the SP 3 is available for download and after consulting with some of my application gurus decide that SP 3 will work with my apps and possibly not screw up my comptuer too badly, I decide to try it and click on the download button and poof, nothing happens, the notice just disappears and I can't find the right MS site to download SP 3 for "regular users". No more little yellow shield on my desktop or task bar, etc.

What's up with that? MS has been bugging me for days to download and install SP3 and then nada.

And how do I stop MS from constantly trying to download "Genuine Advantage" every time I do an update?

Any other words of software advice from you Wizards here at Tom's?

Thanks.

You could also manually go to Windows Update and SP3 will be prominently displayed for your downloading pleasure.

Maybe you should consider yourself lucky and stick with SP2, SP2 is still being updated by MSFT update, and you can avoid some of the pitfalls some of us have run into with SP3.

to my knowledge the windows update service wont update you till you download the "Genuine Advantage" update, i had this problem but eventually bit the bullet and installed it and then it let me download and install SP3.... I hate the Genuine advantage thing, my laptop is apparently running an illegal copy of windows, strange that since my laptop came with a license(i just decided to put up with the blue star in the bottom right).
