I've had to do a reinstall of Win XP Pro since my wife picked up a nasty virus of some kind that I couldn't get rid of. It was the 'Vista Anti-Virus Scan' scam that tells you your computer is infected and keeps popping up saying if you just buy their program it will remove the virus. It then proceeds to populate the desktop with icons for porn sites. (What kind of insane idiot spends his time thinking these things up?)
I decided the best thing to do was just reformat and reinstall.
I did the reformat and reinstalled XP and since I have an older OEM copy of Win XP, I installed SP2 and SP3 from files I keep on a CD before I even let the system connect to the internet.
After installing SP3, I installed the drivers for my twin 8800GTX's and tried to install the WDM drivers. I kept getting errors installing the WDM drivers and then the same thing when I tried to install the HD audio drivers from the disk that came with my 790i Ultra MB.
They would install, but then give the message that "This device cannot start, Code 10".
In Device manager the drivers for the on-board HD audio and the A/V Crossbar and A/V Capture had the yellow exclamation marks on them. I couldn't get any audio at all.
I did some reading on the internet and read that SP3 can cause installation problems with some drivers, so I uninstalled SP3 and tried to reinstall the drivers.
The audio drivers installed just fine, and so did the A/V Crossbar drivers, but I'm still getting the same message and yellow exclamation points for the A/V Capture drivers.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstall quite a few times, and nothing has worked yet.
The first time I installed XP when I first built the computer, I don't remember having this problem at all. Everything seemed to install just fine then, a couple of months ago.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
