Hi. I have searched a lot for this, but couldn't find the answer. I have a 64bit capable system (Vista capable also) and have 4 gig of ram, and I am planning to install Vista 64bit. But I was wondering, since Vista 64 consumes more ram, and eventually when 64bit applications (I am looking forward from those of adobe when they are release) will also consume more ram, is 4 gig still a good amount, or would this be considered for 64 bit a new low? I read that with 8gig of ram and Vista 64bit the system runs great, but I cannot install more than 4gig of ram in my current system. If anyone knows the answer to this will be greatly apreciated.
Vista 64 will run just fine with the 4 GBs of RAM your MB allows. I have two Vista 64 systems, one has 4 GB the other 8GBs. I prefer using 8GBs. Vista 64 wil utalize or 'address' as much RAM as you give it. None of the RAM you install in VISTA 64 is just sitting there idley passing time. Vista 64 with 8 GBs does have benefits, some of which are mentioned here. If you have time, read the entire article.
Conclusion - 8 GB Improves Efficiency And Comfort
Our testing brought us to a clear conclusion: if you often use several memory hungry applications simultaneously, then there's really no way around upgrading your system to 8 GB. Working with applications, and especially switching between them, is much more efficient than with a typical 2 GB configuration. Also, it would even be feasible to run a modern 3D game that already takes up more than 1 GB of memory by itself while having another application with a large memory footprint running in the background. Thus, load times in Windows are a thing of the past, as is the constant swapping of Windows components to the hard drive.
Vista 64 runs well on 2GB, but 4 is better because Superfetch has more room to cache the start up routines for applications you use. So your computer will be more responsive.
I have 8GB now, but to be perfectly honest, I noticed no difference. Vista 64 will certainly take full advantage, but you'd need to be running very large programs, or lots of programs at once.... Or all the above. At that point you'd see that almost nothing bogs the computer down. But in more normal usage (browser, eMail, and a game) you'd see almost no difference.

In case the OP was wondering, Vista 64 does not NEED more memory than Vista 32, well, maybe a little more, but there is a myth out there that Vista 64 uses almost 2x as much RAM due to 64 bit processing and this is simply not true.

Thanks for all the replies. I tough that maybe with 64bit Vista using 4gig of ram, would be like running XP with 256 of ram. Everything is perfect unless you install a single application lol. When I install the OS and my applications I will post my results here.
