I built a new system with two new 640GB WD drives, but I wanted to install the OS on one 74GB WD Raptor that was part of a RAID set that was in my old PC(running XP). When booting the new PC off the Vista disc, the install doesn't see the Raptor drive(the bios does though so I know it's installed properly). I've tried loading Vista on the new drives and reformatting the Raptor through the disk manager service, but the install disc still doesn't see the Raptor.

What do I have to do to get the Vista install to see my Raptor drive so I can install the OS on it? Thanks.

Is the Raptor connected to the same controller as the WD drives? If not, then try moving it to the same controller. If it is, then you may need to have drivers ready to add during install.

I assume it is on the same controller. I'm using the P5Q Deluxe mobo that has 6 SATA ports on it. Don't know if this matters, but I also tried having only the Raptor plugged in and the Vista install still didnt see it(showed no drives available).

When you say drivers, do you mean SATA drivers for the mobo or drivers from Western Digital?

SATA drivers for the mobo... does Vista see the other drives when they are plugged in? If not, then for sure you will need drivers. You might want to check your RAID settings as well... if you're not going to be using RAID, change the option back to IDE / ACPI. If you are going to use RAID, then you'll probably need the driver.

Vista does see the other drives when they are plugged in. It's strange, because I am also using an old 300GB Maxtor and sometimes when I have all 4 drives plugged in(the two new WD's, the Maxtor, and the Raptor) the Maxtor will disappear too. I don't know if it's trying to RAID the Raptor and the Maxtor together, but regardless....when I have the Raptor in alone nothing is found. I've tried different cables and SATA ports too.

I assume I can use the Asus mobo disc to load the drivers while on the install screen for Vista, correct? Thanks for your replies...I'll let ya know later how it turns out.

Hook up the hard drive you want to format and use a Windows XP disk to format the drive. Like you were going to load up Windows XP. Boot to the Windows XP disk and format the drive you want to from the Window XP Installation. After formatting the drive with Windows XP, Vista should see the drive you just formatted when you try and install Vista.
