xp locks up at welcome screen

I have a HP pavilion ze5400 - The XP logo and loading bar come up correctly; however, once the system attempt to load the user login screen (blue screen with XP logo and user login) it hangs at the logo with no login available. I have switched memory, removed and reset battery, did a fixboot with no luck. Loading in safe mode provides same scenario.

Any help would be appreciated!

If xp won't boot in safe & normal mode, it may be game over. You'll have to boot up the xp setup disk, and select repair install when asked.

Turned out to be a nasty virus - removed HD and used it as slave - hooked to another XP and it came to life. It began loading my ini files - quickly unplugged the unit, did a system restore on the new XP and ran virus detect. Restore seemed to work. Old drive has been destroyed and life is getting back to normal!
