Does anyone have any experience with digital upscalers? I would like to get
one to improve the signal from my Cable (Charter) so I can enjoy more of my
Sony KDF-60XS955. Should this improve my video quality? Any recommended
products/brands?

Thanks.

Not likely...garbage in, garbage out.

We have an up-converting DVD player, a Panasonic S97, that will input DVD
images via HDMI at 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i, your choice. We find the best
image to be at 720p on our KDF-60XS955 and it is an improvement from the
480p picture delivered by our other DVD player, a Panasonic DVR/DVD E80.
But the difference is not dramatic.

We also get an improvement in picture quality by using a CableCard instead
of a cable box. There, the difference is much more noticeable for SD. I
think the HD is also a little better via the CableCard but it looks great
either way.

I doubt you would get much difference from using a digital upscaler, since
your TV set upscales everything it gets to 788p (its native resolution)
anyway. But if you are not using a CableCard, that is definitely something
you might try, as it will significantly improve the quality of your SD
pictures, anyway.

My feeling is that SONY HDTVs have pretty good upscales within their
guts...

If the analog or SD Digital Signal is poor, Any HD upscaler can not
improve

it.... Probably makes it worse..... Run that 'bad' signal
(temporarily) thru
your Analog RF input.

I'm assuming you use a Component cable from your Charter Box to the
Sony HDTV.

Mack --

Just curious if you tried receiving cable without the cable card installed.
In that case, how does SD look? My thought is that it would look the same
since the TV's tuner would be used in both cases. Let me know as I am
curious. I have thought about a cable card from Time Warner, but have not
really had the need yet for the digital channel offering or premium content.
I would like to have some of the HD channels such as TNT and ESPN offered
with it though. I receive several HD local channels over cable without a
cable card, but generally, I prefer to use my indoor antenna because I get
many more channels since I live between two cities.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff for what it's worth, I have tried hooking direct and via my cable box
(no cable card), and the cable box is clearly a better picture.

No, I haven't tried SD without the CableCard installed. But that would be
an interesting experiment sometime when I have it out to re-seat it.
(Haven't had to do that lately and don't want to mess with it unless I do.
Let sleeping dogs lie.) I have tried them via a Time-Warner cable box,
though, and they look better using the CableCard.

We really like the cable "HD tier". An excellent use for $10 a month, IMO.
I would pay several times that just for ESPN, at least during football
season. ESPN has the best football HD, I think. And we also like all the
nature and IMAX stuff that run on HD tier channels like INHD, INHD2 and
DISCHD. I watched a whole show about beavers the other night. (The kind
that live in the woods and build dams!). I would never watch a show about
beavers in SD, that's for sure.

I also have a little indoor HD antenna connected to my set's antenna output,
over which I can get some, but not all, of the local OTA channels. (Fox,
unfortunately, has very low power digital output until, supposedly, next
summer). HD looks about as good OTA as via the cable, although it tends to
pixallate now and then. Good backup, though.
