A federal jury Thursday found a 32-year-old Minnesota woman guilty of illegally downloading music from the Internet and fined her $80,000 each — a total of $1.9 million — for 24 songs.

Jammie Thomas-Rasset’s case was the first such copyright infringement case to go to trial in the United States, her attorney said.

Attorney Joe Sibley said that his client was shocked at fine, noting that the price tag on the songs she downloaded was 99 cents. She plans to appeal, he said.

This defendant has a point in my opinion. How can a song selling for $0.99 merit an $80,000 fine for copyright violations? Since the whole point of a fine is to financially hurt someone enough so that they'd never consider repeating the act, wouldn't $24,000 total ($1,000 per song) do a good enough job anyway?

It's a case of not making the punishment fit the crime. I doubt this woman makes enough money to even cover the $80,000 per song, without becoming destitute at least.

Obviously, the RIAA would like this case to stand, as an example to the rest of us. They probably will offer to settle for a significantly less, but still extremely high amount. :P

i think that its not womans fault... it is but she is not the big criminal!
WHY...?!?!?
because... first: from which place did she downloaded files ? he who uploaded files should be arrested! UPLOADING IS NOT LEGAL! not downloading!
why again!!!? supose i have kids and the turn on my computer and acidentaly download something because of the stupid pop ups and adds!!

second: fines are too big. no one can afford that!!!!

Exactly! Hopefully this woman will win in appeals.
