Ok, well I got this computer virus by opening an email. I really wanted to get rid of it. At the same time, I want my whole hard drive erased and like new. So I thought - why not do both at the same time?
I re-installed vista x64 to get rid of the virus (did it do the job?), and I downloaded killdisk software from killdisk.com.
Now, I tried formatting the hard drive to get rid of the data on them, but windows says I cant since vista is installed on one of them. So can I use killdisk to get every last bit of data off my hard drive?
There is an option to "wipe" the hard drive and "kill" it. Will killing it permanently damage my hard drive so I cant use it?
I'm pretty sure if you wipe the hard drive, it won't physically kill it. That'd be pretty drastic! I'd imagine the option would only format the hard drive and remove what's already on it. Although a defrag might be a good idea too before you go that far.
If you reinstalled Vista from scratch, the virus should be long gone. Unless of course the virus was something that attacked the boot sector and had a more crippling effect on your PC.
from their description it sure sounds like the 'kill' procedure will simply fully erase the data and not ruin the drive - the 'wipe' procedure sounds like it will wipe only the free space. That's how I read it anyway. So a kill and wipe sounds like the ticket.
However, as the previous poster said there is essentially no chance a virus will still exists after even a regular reformat and reinstall.
