I will be installing Vista (64 bit) for the first time when my new hardware comes in Tuesday and I don't have any experience with the OS. I have two 75GB Western Digital Raptors that I'll be striping - how is this done in Vista? I have the disk I used to do it for WinXP, will that work or will I be needing something else?

What board do you have? On my 780i, there was an option when booting up to create an array. I don't know if it'll be different for you.

I ordered an Asus P5Q Pro

I've only setup a raid once (two years ago) and if I remember correctly, I had to use a disk to load some Raid drivers so XP would recognize it. Will I need to do the same for Vista?

Heya Wiluven,

You board is higher end than the 2 previous ASUS boards I set up in a RAID 0 array not long ago.

I done this from within the BIOS. A hardware RAID setup. I setup the RAID for Vista <i>before</i> I installed the operating system.

In the BIOS where you can see if the drives are detected you should see an option referring to RAID. In here you will need to take that drives from the left panel and move them to the right panel which will be for your RAID then save the changes.

I appreciate your input Btk - should be a piece of cake then.

Heya Wiluven,

Yeah it's fairly easy.

Ensure the Raptors are connected to the RAID SATA ports on the motherboard. These should be white and orange? Their colour differs from the other SATA ports.

The info below is from the ASUS P5Q Pro online manual.

You must set the RAID item in the BIOS Setup before you can create a RAID
set(s). To do this:
1. Enter the BIOS Setup during POST.
2. Go to the main menu, select "Storage Configuration" , then press <Enter>.
3. Select the item "Configure SATA as" then press <Enter> to display the configuration options.
4. Select [RAID] then pres <Enter>
5. Save your changes, then exit the BIOS Setup.

Next...

6. During POST, press <Ctrl+I> to display the utility main menu.
7. From the utility main menu, select "1. Create RAID Volume" and press <Enter>.
8. Enter a name for the RAID set and press <Enter>.
9. When the RAID Level item is highlighted, press the up/down arrow key to select RAID 0 (Stripe), and then press <Enter>.
10. When the Disks item is highlighted, press <Enter> to select the hard disk drives to configure as RAID.
11. Use the up/down arrow key to highlight a drive, and then press <Space> to select. A small triangle marks the selected drive(s). Press <Enter> after completing your selection.
12. The rest of the default settings are ideal for your set-up, the default stripe size and the volume capacity wil indicate the size of your HDD's combined.
13. Press <Y> to create and you're done.

You can begin your OS install. Unlike XP, I have never had to worry about installing the SATA drivers with Vista as the OS has always recognised my SATA drives.
