My current system is an AMD 3500+, GeForce 6800gt, 1 GB of corsair XMS ram, and an Asus A8V Deluxe MB. Antec Smart Power 2.0 500 watt PSU.

I have been back and forth about upgrading to PCI but really dunno if I should wait or not until next year. My question is this:

1.) With the current power supply could I run the best available AGP card? The power supply has 17A and 19A 12 volt rails. Also how bad would the 3500 CPU bottle neck?

2.) What could I do with $1200.00 to upgrade to PCI format? Here is my current list

MB ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813188013 - $249.99

CPU ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819115003 - $225.90

Ram ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820220144 - $145.99

Graphics card ~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814130072 - $559.99

PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817153039 - $169.99

Total ~ $1351.86

I know it's over the $1200.00 budget but I'll prolly tone down the graphics card to an 8800 gts.

I play a lot of games but also do some photo editing (not a whole lot). I still have a 19" flat screen crt monitor thats in perfect shape but don't have the budget to update it yet to an lcd.

In a nutshell I could spend $200-300 on a new AGP card, possibly another $100-200 for a new AMD CPU and maybe a little more if I need a new PSU. A total of maybe $300-500 dollars or I could spend $1200-1500 for a complete upgrade. Will staying AGP get me by for another year or two? Thanks in advance.

First, I don't think it makes sense to put $300 to $500 to upgrade, with that PSU you should be able to upgrade the video. If you can afford the $1300, I'd build the new machine. That is a really expensive mobo and PSU and I'd make sure I was playing games that could take full advantage of the video card given its cost.

Agreed. There's been a few sub-$800 gaming pc builds with 8800 gts in this forum. Much more balanced. IMO, 680i would be best paired with 6600 or 6700 cpu. You could do a 650i with 4300 & 8800 gts or something.
