Gateway N53 Internet connection lost

Hello,
My computer worked fine for 3 months, but then lost the ability to connect to the internet with either exploer or google chrome. A more computer literate cowork got my internet working on explorer 64 bit so I can check email, but I can not download updates or update my virus scanner. Has anyone else had this problem and can it be fixed?
