A quick google looks to support my gut: DirectX (9|10) performs slightly better on the same canned benchmarks, but openly is obviously more portable (which can explain the performance difference)

This wiki article seems to do a pretty good job of going into some of the specifics of the differences, if you care to dive in

not in terms of benchmarks . if you had to look at both of them on the same game then what would look better

The technologies themselves don't determine the graphical quality. It depends on the game engine and models that are used. A DX11 game can look 10x better or worse than another DX11 game, and the same goes for OpenGL. It just depends on how they were utilized.

Each has it's advantage. DX tends to have slightly higher performance, but is limited to Windows. OpenGL still performs great, and is usable on numerous platforms.

Neither is "better" than the other.

You can produce the same visual effects on both, but different effects are simpler on one or the other.
