I'm in the need of a new DVD player. I have an old HDTV that only plays 480P
and 1080i. So, the new DVD player doesn't need a DVI connection on it.
Although, I want it to be able to play DVD+-R, MP3's, VCD, etc...pretty much
anything you throw at it. I saw the Sony NS775 which had a pretty good price
and played everything....but decided to see if anyone had another model they
highly recommend. It has to be a progressive scan too. What's really weird
is the new Samsungs play at 525P for progressive scan and not 480P. My TV
can't display 525P....and thinking what TV's do?

I have the SONY DVP-NC675P and it does all that you listed and it has
stellar pro & real world reviews. I has been 100% flawless for me. I
got it for $105 shipped. Can't go wrong with that while waiting on
Blu-Ray DVD late 2005 or mid 2006.

525p hmm...maybe someone knows? Regular NTSC has 525 scan lines, 265 lines
alternately displayed odd lines and even lines. It is called 480i, even
though it has 525 lines. I guess, due to overscan only 480 of them are
visible.
Perhaps I am going out on a limb here, but my guess is that 525p and 480p
are the same thing.

Check out the Panasonic DVD-S97. We have one and like it very much. Plays
480i or p, 720p, 1080i, your choice. HDMI, component, whatever. We find
the best picture on our Sony 60" HDTV is 720p, via HDMI. Just a tad better
than at 480p from our other Panasonic DVD, an E80 DVR.
