When you say it "shows to be inaccessible" what exactly do you mean. Is it visible in Disk Management? Is it recognized there as a valid partition? If so, have you tried assigning a drive letter to it?

i can view it and the folders, but when i click on the folders it says "cannot access that drive. drive is inaccessible." or something similar. i'm not at home so i cannot repeat the message verbatim. someone mentioned that XP doesn't recognize HDs over 127 gb and i need to install the service pack. is that true? any other ideas?

Yes - the 127Gb limit in early versions of XP is true. You should install the latest service packs. It should work with SP1 or SP2 if you don't want to install SP3.
