What is the process to backup your hard drive and clean your existing hard
drive?



I spent some money to have my hard drive eradicated of SPAM and Spy-ware.
And it works beautifully again. I asked the technicians what their process
was and they replied they have hardware and software in the $1000+ to
perform this process.



I do not believe that it cost that much for both software and hardware to
clean a PC hard drive.



It is my understanding I am to

a) Copy my PC hard drive onto another PC hard drive.

b) Reformat my existing PC hard drive

c) Reload Operating system (Windows XP PRO)

d) Copy back from the 2nd PC hard drive onto the original hard drive
Data files only

e) Reload Windows Office and any other software that was originally on
the PC



My QUESTION to whom ever is what is the process to:

1) Backup my PC Hard drive and

2) Hardware and Software need

3) What kind of cost should I expect to pay for these items.

4) Can this be done by connecting an external or internal hard drive to
my existing PC or must I buy another PC to perform this task.

Backing up your hard-drive can be expensive or cheap, it's up to you to
determine the cost/benefit.

A simple, very good, method is to have a tape drive installed and backup
to tapes (one tape with enough capacity to do the entire drive).

Another method is to use a DVD +/-RW drive and burn your data files (not
the entire drive) to DVD disks once a week (or as needed).

Another method uses a removable drive, like one of the USB drives, and
run a backup to the drive.

There is also a method where you backup a full "image" of the drive that
lets you completely wipe/restore to the same (or different) drive with
everything the way it was at the time of the "image".

With the exception of the tape drive, most of the above only costs a
couple hundred $ to purchase and license the parts/software.

Your bigger question should be - where do I learn how to secure my
computer against malicious software and exploits.

I just had to say, to get rid of spyware and such, ad aware is a free
program that scans and rids it. Zone alarm firewall has a free version.
Spyware blaster works well also for an extra and is free. Spybot search
and destroy will also help you get rid of pesty spyware.Spam is usually
unwaranted email. I tackled a system last week that barely ran, 1034
spyware programs. To date, never have i seen so many. I rid the pc of
all of it without all money. They told the lady 240 dollars to backup
her files and clean the hd. You have to be very carefull of some techs,
yes there are some rip off artists in many forms. You can use Ntbackup
which usually comes with windows and back up your system to another hd
or cd or dvd. And it's free. I have made near full system backups to
dvd and they work great. There are probably some better free backup
softwares out there but this one does the job. Go to www.download.com
and you will find the ad aware and zone alarm etc.... If you make a
backup while your system is doing good, you can use it if your system
ever fails or if you have to do a fresh install again.

Hi,

I can't disagree with PCDaddy. He has given you pretty good advice
and I must say anyone that wants to charge you big buck is ripping you
off.

The programs I use are all free and they work and are recommended by
many who only do that kind of work. Here is our shop, this is what we
put on computers to clean and keep clean computers. ALL FREE:

Zone Alarm - free firewall
AVG - anti-virus scanner
Ad-aware SE personal - spyware and advertising programs cleaner
Spybot S & D - spyware and advertising programs cleaner
Spyware Blaster - Spyware bugs prevention
Spyware Guard - Spyware bugs prevention

You will need to update some of these every week or so, but many of
them even run in the background so you never see them.

For the backup, what I suggest is that you go on Ebay and pick up
a copy of Norton Ghost 2003. That is better than the 2005 version and
you can pick up one for less than ten bucks. Use it for years, in fact
I have recently removed my 2005 version and put back my old 2003 version
since it is such a great program.

Then format your spare hard drive to clean it, then Ghost a copy of
your main drive to your spare disk. If you get problems or have a
crash, just copy back to your main drive with the Ghost copy.

That is my two cents worth.
