Forum Linux/Free BSD : General Discussion YlmF -- any thoughts ?

I recently installed the Chinese distro YlmF 3.0 on an older desktop. This installation is for the 14-year-old daughter of a friend. The Windows-clone distro was chosen so as not to imtimidate -- it closely resembles XP -- something she's familiar with.

The ease of installation and well-chosen Sources List (making upgrade painless and paneless) were impressive. People may well wonder at the seeming change of heart regarding things Windows, but it has to do with the intended user. ("Know your audience" is my rejoinder to critics )

YlmF 3.0 is also based on Ubuntu-10.04-LTS, the last 'buntu I would choose, personally. Overall, it was a breeze. The repos facilitated download and install of educational software, as well.

A review from Dedoimedo is here.

Just my tw0-cent's worth. I wanna hear yours.

My first thought is that they've shamelessly stolen commercial work to make that UI. No way any western company would get away with such a blatant act. That said it does make it look like the real deal but how long does it really take somebody to understand that the OoO document icon is the same thing as the Word icon? From having done a similar operation moving my brother from XP to Gnome it wasn't that hard a switch for a non power user.

There are other ways of getting a Windows style look, IceWM does a good job of being and NT4 UI, QVWM is another. Nothing stopping you installing either on the latest Mint, either the Debian or Ubuntu based flavours.

I dunno, I'm just not feeling the love for it. Whilst the dev's did a better job of it than I could it really does seem to be stealing from two camps, both Windows and Ubuntu.

Yeah, it seems like a blatant ripoff to me. If you want to install XP, why not just spend the $80 or whatever it is and get a legitimate version? Hell, I'm sure you can get a legit version for much less than that.

Or use LXDE? It's close enough?

I'm hearing prices as low as $10 for a legit XP licence can be found if you can get an install CD from a friend. MS Used XP to kill Linux on the netbook, the upshot is that it's now a very cheap way to go if you can live with the short lifespan it has left with official support.

Where is this $10 said license?

*eager to buy more copies of XP*

From memory it was a US price for OEM licences. Best I can find UK side at the moment is £39 for XP Pro OEM including media, that's including 17.5% sales tax.

Given that you can get that on Amazon I would reckon the local tech fair they hold near me every couple of weeks would be half that based on past experiences.

That's just for 5 minutes digging, there will be far better offers out there in some of the grey markets.

Actually I just read the reviews on that link and it sounds a bit suspect.

It's the right sort of direction. Referb or old OEM stock does get cleared out and is legal.

This is what we are speaking of, is it not -- shades of grey in the marketplace. The Chinese play by different rules, so to criticise their actions in coming up with the logical end for the direction Canonical is presently heading while condoning circumnavigating MS policy seems inconsistent, to me.

My hat's off to Zhongguo for this one
