I have an iPAQ2210 with a 4Mb CF card and a 1Gb SD card.
Various programs installed but I doubt that would make much difference to
overall use of memory. However, when attempting to use my Rail Timetable -
stored on the 1Gb SD card - I get a message offering to convert storage
memory to program memory (or is it the other way round?).
If I OK that dialogue nothing happens and I have to resent, at which stage
it offers to boot in safe mode. Even if I let it do that the program will
not run - seeming to insist that it needs more memory!
Can anyone shed light on the problem and perhaps suggest a solution? For the
moment I've remove the program to avoid problems.

Steve,
It could be that the Rail Timetable is needing an enormous amount of memory
to run. Have you checked to see what the requirements are of the
application to see if that is the case? Even though the application is
stored on a card, it will require some physical device memory to run. If it
requires more than you have available, even after conversion, it could cause
all kinds of, erm, interesting issues. :-)

OK, I'll check up on that.
In the meantime why is it that the iPAQ cannot convert the storage memory
available - 4 Mb on the CF card alone along with a fair bit spare on the SD
card - into program memory.
The dialogue appears asking me if I'd like to do it but it doesn't seem to
complete the task!

Your internal memory is split into those types. The change in ratio of this
affects the internal storage memory only, not any expansion cards.

So are you saying that the iPAQ cannot convert storage from one type to
another - even though it specifically asks me if I would like to?
With 4Mb available on CF and 1Gb available on SD I would have thought the
iPAQ could deal with anything you threw at it. Instead it gives me these
weird error messages.

Basically yes, the iPAQ can not convert a CF or SD card to "program" memory,
any more than your PC can convert it's hard drive into RAM memory. You have
a limited amount of RAM memory within each Pocket PC, what you can do is
take that amount of RAM and adjust how the iPAQ uses it between program
memory or storage memory. Adding a storage card to your iPAQ does not
increase this RAM memory directly. It may allow you to move some programs
from the internal RAM (Storage Memory) to the external CF or SD card. Hope
that helps.
As to your original question, it sounds to me as if you have too many
programs stored on your 2210. How many today screen programs do you have?
When you see the screen that allows you to adjust the internal or ram
memory, you may want to try moving the slider to the maximum amount of
program memory. But I strongly suspect that what you need to do is uninstall
some programs from your 2210 internal memory and instead install them to the
SD card.

Here is the best solution. I just tried and it works great there is a
program called SKTools. This will allow you to see what processes are
running and you can kill them as well as whats running on startup both by the
folder and by the reg. It gives you a lot of options as to free up memory by
relocating your shared .dll's as well as cleaning and twicking your registry.
It also lets you offload your Internet Explorer Support files to your Cards
as well as your Advanto files to your cards. This has made a huge difference
on my PPC....

Very little to choose from it seems - any thoughts?
