Forum Windows Vista : General Discussion Questions about .NET in Vista

Hello,

Here is my dilemma,

I am starting to program and I was recommended smallbasic as a good simple intro language. However it needs .NET 3.5 to run, I read that 3.0 is already installed into Vista but I don't see it in add and remove programs. How do I see if it is installed? I Googled it but didn't find satisfactory answers. Can anyone help?

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit OEM

Will this .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package)http://www.pixlabs.com/microsoft__net_faq.htm] do the trick? I think it's about 231 MBs in size

Thanks

If its not there you don't have it. Think it only comes with Vista Ultimate, if at all.

All you have to do is a google search to find links to valid Microsoft downloads, its all free:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz [...] k+download

To get V3.5 I think you are going to have to have earlier versions already on your computer, V2 at the earliest. Not 100% on that tho.

What IDE are you going to be using, I think only Visual Studio runs the .Net framework (currently at Visual Studio 2008). Is not cheap but you can get free express editions. http://www.microsoft.com/express/

However, these don't allow full support of the language you are using.

From what I read I don't think that 1.0 is required. But 2.0 and up is. So I will install 2.0 and then 2.0 SP1, 3.0, and then 3.5 since the 3.5 package includes 3.0 SP1, and finally 3.5 SP1

As for what IDE I am going to be using, I think that smallbasic comes with it's own.
From my understanding of what an IDE is... I'm still a noob to programming.

Thanks! I'll post and tell what happens

When I tried to install 2.0 I got a message saying that it was already installed as part of the operating system. I guess I'll try 2.0 SP1 then

Ok I got it all working,

All I did was install 3.5 and then 3.5 SP1. I guess 3.0 was already installed like they said, It just wasn't visible.

Good work! IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment. Its just what program you use to code in. What are you using for smallBasic? I do everything in Visual Studio!!!

Oh, The Smallbasic package comes with it's own compiler and editor.

But that Visual Studio looks awesome! Thanks for the link! So with Visual Basic Express I would be programming in Visual Basic?

I think I'll start with Smallbasic as it seems to be a stripped down version of Visual Basic and then do Visual after I get some experience in Smallbasic.

Thanks!

Hey! Why Don't Any Of My Links Work? The link I just gave you says content not found...

And when I use the insert URL button in the post message screen, It is inserted as plain text.

You gotta put the link between the tags, not in the first one. Thats what I do anyway. Yea visual basic express is for visualbasic. You can use so many languages with visual studio, C++, C# (XNA for creating games), VB, .NET, HTML, ASP.NET......

Ok thanks! This warrants a download..

I dont suppose your a computing student or on any computer courses because microsoft have this student alliance thing where you can download free copies of visual studio 2005 and 2008. These come with all the functionality of the IDE and the frameworks for all the languages. So with one download your ready to code in a whole array of different languages.....haha i didn't mean for my use of the work array to sound like a pun. Its worth asking your uni if you are a student tho.
