I upgraded my PC from a Core 2 Duo E8400 to a Core 2 Quad Q9550, which made my Vista DRM disappear, which has made WMP and Zune Marketplace completely inoperable. I've been to Microsoft's Support website and their guidelines did not help at all. First attempt was to rename the DRM folder, which I did, but it didn't really matter since the DRM was completely gone anyway. Second attempt was to change the DRM file in the registry, which I was unable to do, even when running in Administrator. Not sure where to go from here; any ideas?
I upgraded from e8400 to q9450 earlier this year and experienced some unexpected problems. My q9450 was not recognized correctly in Device manager for example. A reinstall of Vista 64 OS fixed all problems.
Yeah if you check the cpu section, I had a long issue with my device manager after the upgrade that was eventually fixed, and was left with this, without having to reinstall vista. Was really hoping I could avoid this; if it's the only solution, I guess it's the only solution.
EDIT: A related question, I started this system trying to install Vista 64, but had compatibility issues, and ended up installing Vista 32. My system is finally stable, so I was thinking maybe a fresh install of x64 would work, would I be able to switch back to my x64 copy with a reinstallation, or would that cause issues?
I searched Ms and tried some of the fixes there for the problems I was having atfter pulling the e8400 and dropping in the q9450, nothing at MS solved th problems. A reinstall of Vista 64 fixed everything.

You can't just "upgrade" Vista 32 to Vista 64, a complete reinstall must be done.
Um, yes, nice reading comprehension. At first I was going to say yes, sometimes I choose the incorrect word to describe what I'm doing to my computer, however I never said, "I want to upgrade from x86 to x64." I specifically said would it be possible at this point in time to do a fresh install of x64. I do also realize this question would be difficult to answer as it all depends on my hardware and the current installed drivers, however it was a generalization on whether or not it would be easier to install x64 over x86 than it was when I tried installing x64 on a fresh system with no installed drivers.

But on a fresh install there will be no installed drivers, so it still sounds like you are talking about some sort of in place upgrade, unless I am missing something here. . The drivers must all be installed anew and because you are going from 32 to 64 they would need to be different from any you are currently using.

I see. Well, I guess I was also thinking of the fact that I've had a lot of BIOS issues, and only recently updated/flashed BIOS, so if a fresh install of -either- was necessary, maybe going back to x64 would work, even though yes, it would be overwriting my installed hardware drivers.
