Just upgraded my system from an opty 170 to an E6420 and damn what a difference. My opty I had overclocked to 2.5ghz and it ran fast but with the E6420 I was able to hit 3.2 ghz dual prime stable 10+hours and it is a fricken beast.

Only question is CPUZ shows my FSB at 1600mhz I would assume that means DDR2800.

Northbridge on the gigabyte DS3 board gets damn hot I mean blister finger hot but havn't had any ill effects from it yet and plan to mount a slot cooler with a cowl to sap that heat outta the case.

System:

Thermaltake Shark full tower case
C2D E6420@3.2ghz
2gig G.Skill DDR2 800
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 mobo
2x80gig SATA2 raid 0
X1800XT (soon to be 8800GTS holding off on anything faster until there are actual directx 10 games out.)

Unbelievable difference isn't it? I came from an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and a 6600GT to a E6420 and a 8800gts, like you plan on purchasing. 1600mhz rated fsb is normal. I have my E6420 overclocked to the same speed, 3.2ghz. What voltage are you running at? I have mine a 3.75 volts. I have tried pushing farther but anything over 3.2ghz needs extremely high voltage.

I have everything running at stock voltages @3.2ghz which suprised me. I'm almost tempted to try 3.4 or 3.6ghz but seriously @3.2ghz this thing is a monster.

Havn't had any issues in windows apps or games, runs like a champ.

BTW I get my 8800GTS 320 this friday! YAY!

I have the same mainboard, same CPU and similar ram(Kingmax DDR2-800 CL5 5-5-15). My E6420 is Orhtos stable @ 3.2GHz 1.38v, while I use only FSB +0.1v.
It can perform SuperPi @ 3.6GHz (8x450) 1.49v & FSB +0.2v.

My previous C2D was E6400 and was crap! It needed 1.48v to be stable @3.2GHz and was unable to go over 3.4GHz no matter how hard I try. I replaced my E6400 with the E6420 two days ago. So far I tried 3.8GHz @1.53v and was running for several seconds. It crashed before I saved the CPU-z validation file. When I have more time in the following weekend I will try to validate it at 3.8GHz.

I was just playing with my CPU and I was unexpectedly impressed. I set all voltages at default, except the CPU voltage. I undervolted it from 1.325 to 1.28. It was running 20 minutes Orhtos without problems and than I stoped it because I needed my PC. When I go to bed I will let Orthos to run during the night and I will post the results tomorrow. :)

I was able to boot at stock voltage with the fsb bus at 400 but after a half our of orthos it would crash or after about 5 minutes of gaming.
And what are you temps at.
With my tuniq tower, i get around 22c idle on the cores and 35c max on core temp.

ok cool, i was wondering about the memory timings myself.

Mine are at 5.5.5.15. The whole memory thing throws me for a loop. Don't know why. I have the g.skill F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ DDR800.
I like many of you have the same e6420 and the ds3 gbyte board.

Will ya look over this and see if you see anything out of sorts? Id appericate it.

I will be over clocking to 3.2gig tonight if ortho is still runnning when i get off work

editied for info

forgot to say that i believe my vcore is set for 1.36

When I woke up Orhtos(in blend mode) was running for 6 and half hors :)
TM2, CE1, EIST and Virtaulization are disabled. Everything is at stock, except the CPU. It is undervolted @ 1.28v(1.28125 in BIOS) and overlocked to 3.2GHz(8x400MHz). I can only say WOW! 8O 8)
The previous C2D I had was E6400 and really, really it was CRAP! It needed 1.48v to do the same. I can't believe I was so unlucky with it, but I am so happy with my new E6420 now. Because of the crappy CPU I changed the PSU but it was still sucking. Then I was suspecting that my mainboard is a bad overclocker. But now I am sure that my mobo is great.

My CPU cooler is Asus Silent SQUARE, my temps at idle are 30'C and after 6. 5hours of running Orthos(blend mode) 57'C.
My memory default timings are CL5 5-5-15, but its running CL4 4-4-12.

I have an unfortunate problem of having my computer running upstairs where its about 90+ degrees so my cpu temp runs at about 88F and about 125F under max load. Not horrible but this damn heat is pissing me off. I put a slot cooler in to cool the northbridge but I'm now thinking of putting an additional 80mm fan in just to blow air directly on the motherboard for some extra cooling.

If only the temps around here would stay between 68-74F I would be happy.

I live in the southern half of Michigan so we have freezing ass winters and hot as hell summers. Fall and spring are perfect but too short.
