Vista and XP both. It's a basic OS limitation on 32 bit. There are workarounds but MS choose not to use them on consumer level OS because of stability issues. The solution is 64 bit.
The exact amount could be anywhere from 2 gig of usable ram up to 3.5 gig, depending.

also, does it matter if I use identical modules to my two already in my system (same exact brand of ram) for it to work dual channel twice (I already have two 1 gig sticks working dual channel and need two more to also work dual channel)?
And, would it matter if I use different speed ram in there as well beside brand?
Make the next two new sticks the same. Your first two are fine.
Dual channel needs matched pairs. Just make sure that the new pair is put in the same color slots. Say for example the 2 old ones in brown and the 2 new in orange.
As for the speed, you can buy faster ones (for the future) but they will run at the speed of the slowest.
Buy with brand quality in mind.
