Anyone succeed in 'opening' this gadget? I'd like to be able to use
the Ethernet port like on my Replay, otherwise I'll have to return it,
even though it's a better box overall with the dual tuner HDTV, etc.
I'd *really* like to make this work!

Let's keep this topic bumped! I'd like to get this happening too.

I talked to Comcast, they say that the ethernet connection is disabled. I
tried to ping a few likely IP addresses including the address that would
be handed out by my DHCP server, I got no response. They probably don't
want to allow file sharing so chances are they are never going to enable
the port. I also asked when they are going to have a box with a bigger
drive, the support guy didn't know.

It's software disabled. Only Moto/cable company can "enable"

Hey, I think I've found something. I just found this on Motorola's
website (look under faqs). This is one of the boxes comcast uses.
Just found this and haven't read it through but it says its possible
to back up your comcast dvr files to your computer.
To transfer digital recordings to my PC-
The IEEE1394 (firewire) port can be used for transferring digital
video to a PC for archiving, but it is limited by the copy protection
coding that programming providers embedded in the data with the
digital video. The digital video is not accessible for transfer
through the built in software yet. Software companies who provide the
interactive program guides and DVR Menu systems have not yet supplied
the functionality to transfer your digital recordings, but some
people on their own have devised a way to access digital recordings
on the DCT6208 or DCT6412 and offload them to a PC hard drive or
Digital High Def VCR.
When transferring digital video by the method referred to above, copy
protection restriction will apply. The recordings will play from the
other device only if the programming provider has not encoded the
digital content with a "copy never" command. Some programming sources
encode them with a "copy once" command which allows you to transfer it
once but if you try to transfer it again the content becomes
unplayable. Of course, since the method for transferring digital
video described above is in the public domain and not authored or
controlled by Motorola or the software providers described above,
Motorola makes no warranty that it that the method will work.
Motorola will also not be liable for any loss or damage resulting
from your use of such methods.
Here's how to transfer non-copy protected recordings via
IEEE1394/Firewire:

I do not believe the ethernet port is wired to be used in such a
manner, it was intended to act as a builtin cable modem. It probably
will never be able to transmit tv recordings.
I have played around with it myself. Hubs report a link when
connected so the jack is powered. You can retrieve the MAC address
of the ethernet port within the diagnostics viewer (power-off and hit
select, D05 UNIT ADDRESS). I was not able to get any sort of ping
response so it most likely doesn't even have a functioning stack.
On a side note, the firewire ports do work and can be used for
recording video, althought I have not found a way to transfer
existing recordings.
