you can't install xp from vista. It willl not allow you to install an older OS. if you're looking for dual boot then you must do a fresh install of XP and then install vista after, or else it will not work properly.

Sorry I'm not familiar with your equiptment, but does DELL XPS 630 support Windows XP?. Does the MB support XP? Does DELL provide MB/system drivers online for the system? Of course you will need a chipset driver at the least to run Windows XP on that system that came designed for Vitsa and the drivers that OS provided to some extent.

You should have simply gave Vista a chance before messing with XP. Yeah, I know what you've heard and what you've read... but chances are you are reading / hearing information from over a year ago... before SP1 and before vendors got their butts in gear with decent drivers.
Try to create a different partition under vista, load from CD and try to install. I would also try to get the driver for SATA from Dell.com and load it on a floppy disc(works only from floppy) and try to install it. You will never be able to run the installation of XP from Vista, because it does not support downgrade.
do you know if you have a SATA drive (DVD drive)? I was getting the same thing, went into bios and changed my drive from SATA to IDE, try that if your drive is SATA.

If everything is working... why "fix" it?
Agreed. Vista was distinctly mediocre when I first switched, over a year and a half ago. More recently though, and especially since SP1, it's been vastly improved, and I don't see any reason to go back to XP anymore.
When booting from the cd press F8 and goto a command prompt.
at the prompt type
d: (enter) assuming D is the correct partition.
Does it see the partition or do you get a error?
