I've been going back and forth on processors for a while now. I was set on the 6320/6420, but for the price decided a 6600 would be a good upgrade. Now the new processors are coming out in July so I'm wondering...which to choose? Get the e6600 now for $226 or wait until the end of July for the new ones? The info on the new processors and prices is below.

I'm getting a DS4 mobo which is compatible with a 1333 FSB. I may overclock some, but have never done it before so won't go too overboard with it. I'm not too interested in the q6600, even though it's price is getting halved. I really have no use for it and the heat it would produce in my PC. I'll just be using office programs, Photoshop, burning DVDs, multimedia, and some gaming.

Thoughts?

I would get the E6600 now. It is similar to as the forthcoming E6850 in that both have a 9X multiplier, except the E6850 will request the FSB to be 1333 MHz by default. (My speculation: the E6850 is just a factory overclocked E6600 - don't ask for links because I already said it's pure speculation) If you take the E6600 and manually set the FSB to 1333 MHz (instead of stock 1066), the E6600 will also be a 3.0 GHz chip with a 1333 FSB just like the E6850. Really, overclocking the C2Ds is trivial. You should be able to hit 3 GHz on an E6600 with the Intel heatsink, more with a decent aftermarket sink. The Q6600 would be good for heavy duty Photoshop but would be overkill for the rest of your applications, I would agree with your pass on it as well in your situation to avoid the heat.

Amen to that!

i say get the e6600 now, if you are not in any hurry get the q6600 in the coming july for around the price of the e6600 now. i know the q6600 has no affect in today's gaming but it is still nice to have for the future maybe.

you can get the speed of e6850 if you overclock the e6600. so why wait?
